WAYNE, N.J. – November 21, 2008 – International Specialty Products (ISP) is pleased to announce that its Plasdone® S-630 Copovidone copolymer has earned self-affirmed Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) status. Self-affirmed GRAS signifies that Plasdone® S-630 has been recognized by qualified scientific experts as having been shown to be safe under its intended conditions of use, in this case, as an ingredient in dietary supplements.
Plasdone® S-630 Copovidone is a synthetic, 60:40, linear random copolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate. The addition of vinyl acetate to the vinylpyrrolidone polymer chain reduces the hydrophilicy and glass transition temperature of the polymer relative to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) homopolymer. These unique properties make Plasdone® S-630 copolymer an excellent adhesive material and make the product well-suited for use in pharmaceutical formulations and dietary supplements as a tablet binder aid in direct compression and dry granulation and as a wet granulation binder of moisture-sensitive actives.
Plasdone® S-630 copolymer conforms to USP/NF and Ph. Eur monograph specifications for Copovidone and the JPE monograph specifications for Copolyvidone.
